NTS Short Film

Company Director Kal Sabir has been awarded a short film commission by the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) to write and direct Kinaara (Edge).

A solely NTS production, the film tells the story of Adil, a carer to his elderly mother who has dementia.

“I’m immensely grateful to the National Theatre of Scotland for commissioning my short film. There is no word for dementia in South Asian languages, understanding of what it is and how it impacts a person, including their carers, is lacking.

Unpaid carers face monumental challenges, isolation and depression. In South Asian culture, family members are expected to quietly get on with it, to comply with the duty to look after their elderly parents and not abandon them.

Hopefully, my film will help raise awareness of dementia in South Asian communities and the plight of the unpaid carer.”

– Kal Sabir, writer and director of Kinaara (Edge)

Horror Roulette

A Coincidental Engagement is returning to London at the Romford Horror Film Festival, although not as an official selection.

It will be screened as part of a new featured called Horror Roulette. Essentially, an open mic night for films.

The catch: makers of the film must attend in person.

The perks: once screened, the film will receive Official Selection status, be given feedback, and may win one of three awards voted for by the audience.

We just need to be there on Friday 1st March at 8:30pm.

Here’s hoping climate change will be kind for that weekend.

If you’ll be attending, come say hello.

Lift-Off Film Festival

A Coincidental Engagement is an Official Selection at the London Lift-Off Film Festival.

Part of the Lift-Off Global Network, the festival has been running for 14 years and champions new voices in indie filmmaking.

All selections will be screened for four weeks on Video on Demand (VOD), with winners receiving a live screening in London.

APEX Film Awards

We’re pleased to announce that A Coincidental Engagement is an Official Selection at the APEX Film Awards.

APEX is an independent film festival run by filmmakers for filmmakers.

All Official Selections are featured on their website, and award winners receive a live screening at the UK’s oldest operating cinema, The Dome in Worthing, West Sussex, on December 2nd 2023.

ACE Private Screening

A Coincidental Engagement had a private screening at the Glasgow Film Theatre on Thursday 28th September 2023.

Although the screening was mainly for cast and crew, invitations were extended to select professionals in the industry for feedback.

After the screening there was an opportunity to network before the venue opened to the public.

At the time of writing, the film is being submitted to festivals.
